Regular connection with families is essential to the success of my classroom. I welcome and invite your thoughts, concerns, and feedback on any topic related to my classroom community and HTMMesa. Please note that I am rarely able to answer my phone during school hours. If there is something that you would like to discuss in detail, I would prefer to use email to set up a mutually agreeable time for a phone call.

Course Overview

Our year together should be an exciting one! I have a deep love for project based learning and High Tech High's philosophy on education. In my class specifically, we will be working diligently to produce products that transcend the classroom and connect our students to the world around them. This year we will cover a wide variety of topics whether in person or connecting remotely. I feel strongly that are students deserve transformative, meaningful, and impactful education regardless of our current pandemic. Projects this year will still require heavy engineering, complex thinking, problem solving, and the constant development of empathy in all that we do. I'm also always striving to use the classroom as a way of "balancing the scales" in society. We will examine and delve into topics of racial discrimination, sexism, ageism, gender inequalities, and inequalities centered around disabilities. As a teacher, all of these topics will be viewed through the lenses of history, art, and literature. It is my personal goal to create empathetic members of society capable of changing the world that surrounds them. I accomplish this goal by following a simple mantra in class: ASK, THINK, ACT. Throughout our entire year we will ask questions that challenge conventional thought, think deeply and uniquely, and act to change our communities. A semester overview of tentative dates will soon be found under my calendar, yet as with any project based school, all dates are subject to change.

Community Expectations

I feel so privileged to teach in the High Tech High community, and I believe we should all honor the experiences we will have here. The 7th grade students live up to that high level of responsibility in our community. As a community, we will rely on each other for success, and will develop rules and norms together throughout the year to realize the goals we set for ourselves. Please come with an open mind and a willingness to participate.

Evaluation

The Clark/Gotilla team use a hybrid model of dialogical grading. This in-depth, communicative, reflective practice of grading is paramount to developing healthy academic mindsets in students without “boxing them in” with a letter grade. This practice relies heavily on a three-pronged communication system: student-teacher, student-family, family-teacher. Every month(approximately) students will complete reflections. These reflections will be submitted on Fridays. Students will receive the reflections back the following Friday via a living Google document with teacher comments written on them. Students will then take them home to their families where their parents/guardians will respond to the reflection and comments in writing, and those signed reflections will finally be submitted to the teachers to close the loop. It is our hope that these reflections will be a piece of the ongoing dialogue between a student and his/her families about school. These reflections will inform our pass/no pass grading system. Though we will be using a pass/fail system, a list of assignments and their rate of completion can be tracked for each student on Powerschool. In addition, we believe that assessment and data collection is essential to tracking growth and helping teachers adjust their practice to be most impactful, so our students take assessments weekly(usually) that can be found in Powerschool to help parents and teachers track growth in class. This along with the dialogical model, we believe, empowers our students to grow in amazing ways! Lastly, in order for students to be recommended for a passing grade they must have turned in at least 70% of all assignments and shown a record of growth within content areas covered.

Supplies

Students will be given a separate supplies list that is unique ti this year's work.

Absences

Due to the project-based nature of our school, absences can really disrupt the learning process. Of course, they are sometimes necessary despite our best efforts to be present every day. Students will be given extra time to complete work assigned during an absence (extra time equaling the number of days the student was absent if the absences were excused. Unexcused absences will not allow the student to make up the work). In the case of a planned absence (family vacation, dentist appointment, etc.), the student should notify the teacher

and request assignments prior to the absence. When absent, it is always the student’s responsibility to:

1.Upon returning, turn in all assignments assigned prior to the absence;

2.Find out what assignments and information were missed during the absence by checking in with peers and teachers. I post daily assignments and deadlines on my digital portfolio calendar.

***If you know you will be absent for longer than 4 consecutive days, please contact the office at least two weeks in advance to arrange a contract for independent study.***
